True enough, there are many people in Hamilton who never bought into that binary thinking or the caricatures that accompany it. Some are attempting to draw inspiration from the city’s history; others, seeking something new. They’ve been hard at work for years, staring down tough odds and absorbing repeated defeats in pursuit of the occasional victory, trying to map out a path to a place where equality has tangible form, where everyone can enjoy the benefits of the city’s advances. Their commitment seems unlikely. The odds remain difficult. Cause for optimism remains rare. Like others in cities around the globe, there are advocates for the common good who are motivated by an attachment to a particular place and a sense that things can be better.
